A NATIONAL programme aimed at encouraging girls to take up the game of golf is coming to Alderley Edge Golf Club.

The “Girls Golf Rocks” initiative encourages girls aged between five and 18 to pick up a set of clubs and learn to play golf in a fun and friendly way.

There will be a free taster session on Sunday, May 5, with a six-session course – led by Alderley Edge GC professional Ben Spanton – starting the following Sunday, May 12.

For more information and to reserve a spot on the course, please contact Ben Spanton on 07761 107259.

Meanwhile, Edge’s Dunham Forest Trophy team had a superb win over Sandbach in the Manchester and District Golf Alliance’s premier inter-club knockout tournament.

The team started well with a win from Greg Wilmott in the first match out, although Gary Johnstone narrowly lost the next match on the final hole to make it one win apiece.

Edge fell behind when Nick Blackburn was beaten but they then won the next four matches to advance to the next round, where they will face Lowes Park.

Drew Roberts, new member Simon McSweeney, vice-captain Harry Sexton and club professional Charles le Seuer were the ones to provide pivotal victories.

Alderley Edge’s Pro Shop Stableford was played in very difficult conditions, with the divisions being led in by Elliot Bayne (21) and Steve Smith (20).

Over at Styal Golf Club, a card play-off was needed to decide a 15-hole Stableford, with Jeffrey Chadwick coming out on top ahead of Neil Taylor. Anton Bardsley and Luca Davies finished two points further back.

The Sunday Stableford at Styal was much more clear-cut, with Nick Guest out on his own on 30 points.

Closest challenger Cliff Buckley was nine points behind, with Simon Peers following on 19.
